Democrats won both houses. Trump keeps the veto.

Voters who rated the economy poor, called the Iran war the wrong decision and saw corruption in government handed Democrats seven Senate seats, the House and the governorships of Texas, Georgia and Ohio. The size of the win can be counted; how much of it becomes law depends on a president who keeps the veto and has said he would fight the war again.

Indonesia: Prabowo sacks his chief of staff and speaks of treason

Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who ran the National Police until October 1, 2026, was removed from the palace on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, three days after his arrest with two other police generals on charges of tapping the phones of the president, ministers and journalists. The case is the visible part of a fight for command of the security apparatus of Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Israel shuts Rafah and the ceasefire loses its only exit

Israel suspended the Rafah crossing without prior notice on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, stopping aid, fuel and commercial cargo from Egypt. The October 2025 agreement set the number of trucks but never a floor on what must enter, and the 33.4 percent that arrived since then measures what that permission is worth.

Chile: the case against Rabat stalls inside the opposition

The opposition promised a constitutional accusation against Justice Minister Fernando Rabat over 56 commutations of sentence for sexual crimes against minors, and did not file it in the week its own calendar had set. The votes are the reason: 78 are needed, 62 are counted, and 14 deputies of the Partido de la Gente hold the difference.

The 19 seats that hand out the mandate

Herzog opens consultations in ascending order, leaving Netanyahu and Eisenkot for last, and hears Thursday from Ra’am and the Joint List, whose 19 seats decide the mandate. The count that matters is not the 67 recommendations but the 61 seats of a coalition — and the Arab parties’ price points to a minority government.

The Quad will not name China, the G20 will not pose

Four Quad ministers in Atlanta recorded grave concern about economic coercion, arbitrary export restrictions and non-market policies that generate overcapacity, and left the country those words describe unnamed. In the same city on the same weekend, the G20 ended without a common declaration and without an official photograph, because European officials refused to stand beside Sergei Lavrov.

Dead at Jari 2: four drone strikes, no official word

Four drone strikes hit a camp of 1,700 displaced people in South Wollo as students walked home, and the counts run from 14 to 18 dead. The next day a drone hit people collecting sorghum from a truck already bombed in Tigray. The federal government has said nothing, and the only official voice is a local official treating the wounded.

China factory gate shuts for a third time in four months

The official manufacturing gauge fell to 49.3 in October from 50.1, and the statistics bureau put the holiday calendar and the international environment in the account. Inside the average, construction, consumer goods and small firms are contracting while high technology and equipment expand, a split that does not fit the overcapacity charge signed in Atlanta the same weekend.

Apure: a drone strike with no official count

Drones hit a guerrilla camp in southern Apure on October 30 and the army that operates them has published no toll: 19 dead by one count, around 20 by another, nine bodies in a morgue in San Fernando. Five years after an operation that ended with the force withdrawn and 12 soldiers hostage, the target changed, the method changed, and the only record is the one a human rights group wrote.

Ankara bills both sides for the Black Sea

Turkey received Ukraine in Istanbul and set one standard for both belligerents on attacks against civilian vessels, while its September proposal for protected corridors remains without an answer. What closes the sea to shipping is the insurance market: London widened its high-risk area to almost the whole Black Sea, and eight cargo ships were hit in three weeks.

500 Patriots for Ukraine, delivery in the 2030s

The State Department approved the sale of 500 Patriot interceptors for an estimated .1 billion, paid by Canada, Germany, Norway and a European Union loan, on the same day Moscow restated its war aims unchanged. Kyiv will receive the missiles years into the next decade, and the Abu Dhabi table Zelenskyy wants will be set before a single one arrives.

Washington Has Not Yet Recognized Lula’s Victory

The White House had a congratulatory statement ready at the State Department and held it after Flávio Bolsonaro called for the annulment of the election, proclaimed by the Superior Electoral Court at 8:08 p.m. (Washington time, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)-4) on October 25, 2026. Right-wing presidents in South America congratulated Lula, and Washington’s bet on the tenth aligned Latin American president was left unresolved.

Eight countries, one bill: Europe’s wave without an owner

On October 24, 2026, France’s Interior Ministry counted 410,000 demonstrators and the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) nearly 800,000; Italy put paratroopers around Milan’s Duomo and Albania answered with rubber bullets. The mobilisations share no command, and what ties them together is the same bill — rent, wages, schools and pensions — answered in each country with a police perimeter, preventive detention and, in Italy, a soldier on the street.

Lula points to the digital empire three days before the election

In the livestream with André Janones on October 22, 2026, the president said Meta “counts lies” and “favors some people to the detriment of democracy”, on the same day the Superior Electoral Court gave the company 24 hours to explain the “Exército do Lula” channel. A candidate’s reach has become a matter of sovereignty, and whoever audits reach is whoever operates the system.

Trump Uses Cold War Law to Fund Oil

A memorandum dated October 22, 2026 declares oil production, refining, and logistics “essential to national defense” and invokes Section 303 of the Defense Production Act of 1950 to authorize purchases and financial support from the Department of War. It names no project and comes out 12 days before the midterm elections, with diesel prices high since the attack on Iran.

UN warns Palestinians it is leaving Rafah coordination

According to Drop Site News, which cited a senior Palestinian official, the United Nations will stop receiving those returning from Egypt to Gaza in mid-November 2026, citing risks to returnees and repeated Israeli arrests. The UN has not confirmed the decision, which could stall medical evacuations, because the agreement requires the number of departures to equal the number of returns.

The sanctions law Trump signed and suspended in 28 days

The executive order of October 16, 2026 waived the 500% and 100% tariffs and the sanctions two days before the law was to take effect, and the Treasury had already authorized Russian diesel through April 7, 2027. Moscow now speaks of 500,000 tons in October and up to 3.5 million by the end of the year, with the first cargoes expected to reach the United States in November.

Volodymyr Zelensky says he was betrayed by Donald Trump and asks for Starlink back

The network that guides Ukrainian drones stopped transmitting on the move overnight on October 13 to 14, 2026, without warning, and SpaceX blamed the US government, which Kyiv accuses of siding with Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky said he felt betrayed, asked for the service back, and summed up the toll in one sentence: it is a pity to be losing a strong partner.

France freezes public-sector pay and high schools grind to a halt

The blockades reached a second national day on October 1, 2026, when the Union Étudiante claimed 30 universities blockaded in its midday tally and the government convened an interministerial crisis cell. The day before, 356 schools were affected and 625 people were detained. The 2027 budget, the last of Emmanuel Macron’s term, freezes the index point (the reference unit used by the French state to calculate civil servants’ base pay) and leaves the new military spending increase outside the deficit target.

45,000 German students against conscription by registry

Military service remains voluntary on paper, but Germany’s Defense Ministry is already summoning young men to medical exams set for July 2027, including those who answered on the questionnaire that they did not want to serve. In the streets, organizers counted more than 45,000 students in some 100 cities; in the files, conscientious objection applications reached 5,862 in the first half alone.

Pezeshkian on Fox: 60% cap on Iranian uranium enrichment on the table

By offering to dilute its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% and submit to international verification in an interview with Fox News, 24 hours after telling the UN that Iran will not bend, Pezeshkian puts the decision to end the war in Washington’s hands on the eve of the November 3, 2026 midterm elections — and puts back on the table the memorandum of June 17, 2026, that both sides had declared dead.

US: the press pass became an instrument of government

Donald Trump banned the news network CNN, the MS NOW channel and the news outlet Politico from the White House, accusing the three outlets of writing “FICTION and LIES” about his administration and naming no specific story; Secret Service agents, the federal agency that guards the president and answers to the Department of Homeland Security, confiscated their passes on 19 September 2026 and, on 21 September, the three newsrooms asked a court to restore access. The case reaches the bench with a 1977 precedent, with the press pool at its centre and with the five networks refusing to cover the president: the network assigned to feed the signal to every other outlet was one of those barred, and the only video of events became the government’s own.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was shut out of a parliament for the first time, and the Left took Berlin

The last two state elections of the year gave the AfD its second state in two weeks, kept the CDU out of a state parliament for the first time and put the Left in charge of the capital. Friedrich Merz’s government lost at both ends on the same night, and the party that held the Federal Republic together for 81 years is the one being hollowed out.

22 people shot, 19 of them inside cars

A case-by-case review of shootings by federal immigration officers since January 2025 shows where the pattern repeats: traffic stops account for 19 of the 22 people shot and four of the six deaths. In Austin, the man wounded on Sunday is already in federal custody pending deportation, and the investigation into the shooting sits with the agency that fired.

Memory now decides the artificial intelligence (AI) race

The price of plain dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) rose 90% in one quarter as capacity moved to high-bandwidth memory (HBM). China advanced where nobody was looking — 10% of global DRAM, 14% of NAND (Not-And) flash and the most valuable company on the Shanghai exchange — while American export control aims at the previous generation’s bottleneck.
