China nominated Song Li, a maternal and child health specialist, to lead the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, a move that could expand Beijing’s influence over the international body after the United States quit it this year, according to CNA.

Song Li heads the Department of Women and Child Health at China’s National Health Commission and has a 21-year career, according to the WHO. She will run against candidates put forward by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain, Indonesia and Botswana, including three men and three women.
