A report by the Accra Reset initiative, led by Ghana’s president John Dramani Mahama and launched on Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, warns that healthcare in Africa and the Global South is ‘under growing strain’ after the United States pulled out of aid programmes, according to The Guardian and the document itself. It notes that external financing for health in Africa contracted by close to 70% between 2021 and 2025, that Africa produces less than 1% of its vaccines while carrying about 25% of the global disease burden, and that Nigeria absorbed 28,000 health workers formerly employed by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) at a cost of $200m. After the US Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) funding for South Africa was withdrawn, HIV clinics closed across the country and 1.4 million people faced uncertainty about their treatment.
