Envoys of US President Donald Trump told Ukrainian officials on Friday that a deal to allow Russian diesel exports is part of a bid to draw Russia back to negotiations after the failure of previous efforts to launch sustained talks to end the war, three people familiar with the meeting told Reuters.

The warring sides have not confirmed the energy ceasefire Trump announced on Sunday, and Russia struck energy targets inside Ukraine on Monday. Under the deal, Russia will supply more than 2.25 million barrels of diesel to US and global markets, and Trump defended it on Monday as “the right choice for the American people.” The Jerusalem Post reported that Trump said on Monday that Putin wants a deal more than Zelensky and insisted that the ceasefire was agreed because he said so: “They agreed because I said they agreed.”
