Bassam al-Hassan is being bankrolled and protected by American and Lebanese authorities, according to a BBC investigation.
He was offered residency, protection and help securing his living needs in return for information, primarily about journalist Austin Tice. Officials from two branches of Syria’s new government told the BBC they want Hassan back to face trial — but that the American authorities want him kept in Lebanon.
