Sixteen Ecuadorian fishermen were bombed on March 17, about 170 nautical miles from the Galápagos Islands, in an operation for which the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been pointed to, according to BBC News Mundo.

Their boat, the Negra Francisca Duarte II, was heading back to the port of Manta when two drones approached, and the explosions wounded crew members and set the vessel on fire; Le Monde describes the fishermen as collateral victims of American bombs, and one of them mourns the loss of his family’s boat: “This boat was my father’s inheritance, our livelihood. What am I going to do now?”
