A 15-year-old student had his hand blown off during a protest in Lens, northern France, after picking up a sting-ball grenade fired by riot police, authorities said.

A police union source said he appeared to have picked it up to throw it back when it exploded in his hand. By late morning, 413 schools were subject to actions or disruptions, according to the education ministry.
