A crude oil supertanker exploded and caught fire after hitting a mine while trying to leave the Strait of Hormuz on a route described as unauthorised and dangerous, according to Iranian media Press TV.

The Revolutionary Guard said the vessel had switched off its navigation and GPS systems before hitting the mine and warned that “a massive fire awaits” any tanker that disregards the strait’s rules.
