EU foreign ministers adopted on Monday a decision establishing a new support mission in Lebanon aimed at advising the country’s military and internal security forces, according to Reuters, in a text republished by The Jerusalem Post.

According to the Council of the EU, the mission will have an initial mandate of three years. The mission will advise and assist the Lebanese armed forces and internal security forces to strengthen territorial control, border security and also internal security, Kaja Kallas said, in remarks cited by Anadolu and carried by the Middle East Monitor. Kallas said the mission would not serve as a replacement for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and that there cannot be a security vacuum when UNIFIL leaves Lebanon.
