The third aircraft carrier the United States is deploying to the waters around Iran is the USS Theodore Roosevelt, whose strike group left its San Diego base on Sunday, followed a day later by the Makin Island Marine Expeditionary Force with more than 2,000 Marines.

By the end of November, three aircraft carriers and two amphibious groups will be positioned around Iran, a US official told Al Jazeera. The Pentagon is adding Marine Corps ships, up to 10,000 troops, according to The Wall Street Journal.
