Israel has said it intends to shut the British consulate in East Jerusalem on 8 October, in response to the sweeping ban on trade with goods from Israeli settlements announced this month by the British foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, according to The Guardian.

Former attorney general Dominic Grieve assessed that Israel has no legal right to close the consulate. The British mission in Jerusalem dates from 1838, more than 100 years before the creation of the state of Israel, and is separate from the embassy in Tel Aviv.
