Swiss voters are deciding on Sunday whether to approve a more restrictive form of neutrality that would block the country from imposing economic sanctions or cooperating with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to Reuters.

The proposal wants the constitution to stipulate that Switzerland cannot join or cooperate with any military or defence alliance unless attacked, and that it refrain from joining any sanctions unless approved by the United Nations. According to the Associated Press, the initiative is backed by a right-wing populist party that insists the Swiss government has gravitated too close to the European Union and NATO, notably over Russia’s war in Ukraine. Opinion polls suggest rejection: one of the latest surveys shows 68% against with 31% in favour, according to Reuters.
