A localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine took effect early Tuesday ahead of a humanitarian mission in Oleshky brokered by US first lady Melania Trump, according to AP.

The local pause in fighting started at 3 a.m. to allow an aid mission into the Russian-occupied town in southern Ukraine later this week. According to the UN, up to 2,000 people are stranded in Oleshky with dwindling food and medicine and are unable to leave because of explosive mines and drone attacks in the area. In a Telegram statement, Russia’s defence ministry said it had stopped firing toward the Ukrainian city of Kherson at 04:00 Moscow time (01:00 GMT) in preparation for the humanitarian operation, the BBC reported.
