Israel’s military chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, is resisting a new joint offensive with the United States against Iran, according to Haaretz, in a text published by Opera Mundi.
Zamir had already opposed Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to attack Iran before the October 27 legislative elections. Opposition leader and former chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot said that, until a new government is formed, he would back military operations “only in the event of a clear and imminent danger to Israel that cannot wait for the new government to take office”. Also according to Haaretz, Netanyahu openly advocates toppling the Iranian government, while Donald Trump seeks to press the country into a deal more favorable to US interests that would restrict its nuclear program and allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen.
