The European Union began charging a handling fee of 2 euros per type of item in parcels sent directly to consumers from outside the bloc as of Sunday, November 1, according to France 24.
The fee applies regardless of the parcel’s value. It comes on top of the 3-euro duty imposed in July on small packages worth less than 150 euros, a temporary measure in place until July 1, 2028. According to France 24, online marketplaces such as Amazon, AliExpress and Temu, as well as sellers and other intermediaries, must pay the new fee. Some 93 percent of the cheap packages that arrived in Europe came from China.
