The Africa Energy Bank, a US$ 5 billion institution set up by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO), was established to finance oil and gas projects across Africa, according to OilPrice.
Oil and gas investment in Africa fell from US$ 68 billion in 2016 to about US$ 37 billion in 2025. The Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG) estimates that Africa needs US$ 200 billion in annual energy investment, and around 600 million people across the continent lack access to electricity. S&P Global says the bottleneck is turning investor appetite into bankable projects and that US$ 5 billion covers only a sliver of the gap.
