The US State Department declared Lebanon's consul general in Detroit, Ibrahim Sharara, persona non grata over social media posts attributed to him that praised the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 American service members.
In a 2021 post, Sharara allegedly wrote that “the heroic resistance ended the American military occupation of [Lebanon] in a single blow.” The Lebanese Embassy in Washington received formal notification of the Trump administration's decision, according to Lebanese media.
