Voters in Providence, Rhode Island, approved a ballot measure that could lead the city to divest public funds from Israel.
With 81 of 82 polling locations partially reported, the state elections board tallied 75% voting in favor and 25% against. The result is preliminary: with 79 of 82 polling locations reporting, the Rhode Island Board of Elections count stood at 74.99% in favor. The text does not mention Israel and calls on the city to refrain from investing in foreign countries conducting ethnic cleansing, apartheid, illegal military occupation or genocide. The vote makes Providence the largest US municipality to approve some form of Israel divestment, following Somerville, Massachusetts, whose voters approved a nonbinding measure last year.
