The UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara had its mandate expire at midnight on Saturday, after the Security Council failed on Friday to agree on its future; a US draft resolution was vetoed by Russia, and a rival Russian text failed to win the nine votes needed for adoption.
The end of the peacekeeping mission was confirmed on Sunday by UN Secretary-General Guterres.
