UNESCO counted 189 journalists killed worldwide in 2024 and 2025, the highest number since 2014/2015, when it recorded 215 cases.

Of the total, 127 deaths (67%) occurred in countries that are conflict zones, up 24% from 2022/2023. Palestine accounted for 62 deaths, one third of the total.
