The Alternative for Germany (AfD) group in the Bundestag wants to organize a “trilateral summit” in Abu Dhabi, with representatives of the US and Russian governments, to discuss the war in Ukraine, without representatives of the country attacked by Russia.
The group’s foreign policy spokesman, Markus Frohnmaier, said Monday in Berlin that the party is seeking an exchange “at the level of special advisers,” and that Vladimir Putin’s adviser Kirill Dmitriev has already publicly announced the date of the meeting.
The meeting is expected to take place in spring 2027, probably in Abu Dhabi, and will focus on restarting the Nord Stream pipelines and new economic and energy partnerships, according to Frohnmaier.
To end the war, the AfD calls for a 180-degree turnaround in German policy on Ukraine: Berlin should back Russia’s return to the Group of Seven (G7), lift sanctions and buy Russian energy again, without setting preconditions. Toward Kyiv, the party wants Germany to end all payments except humanitarian aid and to “secure” rare earths, gas and other Ukrainian resources “on the US model” as compensation for aid already provided.
