Police in Ecuador arrested former presidential candidate Luisa González on Thursday (22), the main political rival of President Daniel Noboa, and the country’s Attorney General’s Office ordered her held in pretrial detention over an alleged money-laundering crime, according to G1 and Opera Mundi.
González belongs to the Citizen Revolution party. According to Opera Mundi, the investigations would be based on testimony from Estefanía Molina Freire, who reportedly worked in the financial management of the 2023 presidential campaign and alleges the receipt of illicit funds from “sources in Venezuela”, between US$ 300,000 and US$ 500,000.
