A spokesman for Benjamin Netanyahu said he did not know about Donald Trump’s statement that American military aid to Israel would end and that he would check for details.

The aid follows a memorandum of understanding of $3.8 billion a year that is approaching its expiration in 2028, with conversations under way on how Washington’s assistance to Israel would evolve beyond that date. Trump, who announced on Tuesday the cut of $4 billion a year at the end of this year, said Netanyahu brought the matter up and that the prime minister said it would be appropriate not to receive the aid because he understands that this is one of the points of contention. Yair Golan, head of the left-wing Democrats party, said the end of American aid deals a severe blow to Israel’s security and to the quality of life in the country.
