The Palestinian Prisoners Society and the fiancée of detainee Hassan Salameh, Ghufran Zamel, said Israeli prison guards shot him nine times last month.

According to them, the assault came after National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir stormed his cell and filmed himself threatening to kill him. The type of ammunition used and the precise circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. According to Zamel, three days after the assault Salameh was taken to have his injuries photographed and was then returned to his cell without medical treatment and given only painkillers. In 1996, Israel convicted Salameh of orchestrating several bombings that killed and wounded scores of Israelis, and he was sentenced to 48 life terms. He has spent 14 years in solitary confinement since his imprisonment 30 years ago.
