Abortion-rights advocates won in Missouri and Virginia, according to the Associated Press (AP), among 145 ballot questions decided in more than three dozen states on Tuesday.
In Missouri, voters defeated the proposed constitutional amendment that would have reimposed restrictions on most abortions, essentially reaffirming the decision from two years ago, when the state became the first to undo an existing abortion ban. The measure approved in Virginia creates a fundamental right to reproductive freedom in the state constitution, ensuring abortion during the first two trimesters and the right to contraception and fertility care. In Missouri, voters also ended the new district map drawn to give Republicans one more seat in the Kansas City area, after courts ruled it needed approval in a referendum. In Democratic-led Maryland, voters approved a constitutional amendment that could pave the way for new congressional districts in the 2028 election, with former President Barack Obama backing the “yes” campaign.
