Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, 53, suffered a stroke on Saturday after experiencing numbness in his arm at his son’s hockey game and was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring, according to his office.
“He is awake and alert,” he is responding well to treatment and doctors are optimistic about a full recovery, chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement. Murphy is not up for re-election in Tuesday’s midterms that will decide which party controls Congress and is considered a potential presidential candidate in 2028; a 20-year senator from Connecticut, he is the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations and Foreign Relations committees.
