First Lady Melania Trump will bring representatives of Russia and Ukraine together at the White House, an event the White House described as an extraordinary moment in American history.
Melania was praised for helping broker a localized ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia that lasted from 3 a.m. on October 27 until late on November 1, local time, in Oleshky, in the Kherson region. The first lady called the ceasefire a “success” and said “nearly 800 people” had been evacuated, but neither Ukraine nor Russia publicly confirmed exactly how many people left or where they relocated. Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner, who is expected at the meeting, was sanctioned by the United States in 2022, making her ineligible to enter the country without a special waiver from the State Department. Separately, the Kremlin confirmed three-way talks with Ukraine and the United States in Abu Dhabi from November 10 to 11, with Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to President Vladimir Putin, as Moscow’s chief negotiator. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin hopes to finalize plans in the coming days for a meeting between the leaders of Russia, the United States and China.
