Riot police have been deployed at Poland’s Constitutional Court amid an escalating standoff between the government and the court’s top judges, the BBC reported.

On Friday, police surrounded the tribunal and detained three people after some protesters breached the fence and others threw objects at officers, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The court’s website published the suspension of its president, Bogdan Święczkowski, at around 6 p.m. local time and went down soon after, and AP said it could not independently verify the official reasons for the move. President Karol Nawrocki, who was flying to Senegal, said he turned his flight back: “At a moment like this, the President must be in Poland. I am cutting short my flight to Senegal. I am returning,” he wrote on X. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that “restoring the rule of law is our obligation.”
