In a stunning upset, Democrat Gina Hinojosa was elected governor of Texas, the first Democratic governor there in more than 30 years, defeating Republican Greg Abbott on Tuesday.

According to US media projections, Abbott, a three-term governor, lost his reelection bid to the state representative, a result that ends three decades of Republican control of the Texas governor's office.
