Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected governor of Georgia on Tuesday, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in the United States by defeating Republican businessman Rick Jackson.
She won despite the spending deficit created by billionaire Jackson, who tapped more than $200 million of his own fortune for the campaign, and is the first Democrat to prevail in the state governor race since 1998. Bottoms will succeed Republican Brian Kemp, barred by law from seeking a third term, in the third consecutive Georgia gubernatorial election with a Black woman leading the Democratic ticket.
