The Associated Press called Xavier Becerra the winner of the California governor’s race as polls closed, defeating Republican Steve Hilton; Romualdo Pacheco, the only Latino to have held the office since statehood, became governor in 1875 when Newton Booth resigned and served for about 10 months.

Becerra will become the first Latino to hold the office in more than 150 years, defeating Hilton, who was born in the United Kingdom and was a Fox News political commentator.
