The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, demanded an independent investigation into the death in Houthi custody of a Yemeni staff member of the UN office in Yemen and called for full transparency from the group's authorities.
Mohammad el Shami had been arbitrarily detained since June 6, 2024 and, according to Türk, his family was informed of the death only recently, more than a month after it occurred, with no explanation of the cause or circumstances. Türk also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of other detained UN personnel, including seven colleagues from his office.
