Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal announced on October 30 the one-month suspension of its president, Bogdan Święczkowski, and its vice president, Bartłomiej Sochański, in an order signed by Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska.
President Karol Nawrocki turned his Senegal-bound plane back to Warsaw and told the judges present that they “are not Constitutional Tribunal judges”. Święczkowski had been suspended after refusing to let a new member nominated by Donald Tusk and approved by parliament take his seat, an episode CNN describes as a chapter in the clash between the pro-European prime minister and the pro-Trump president. The prime minister said on October 31 that reform had been “blocked by the president and PiS” and that “on certain matters there can be no compromise”.
