The Justice Department of the United States charged former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and former First Lady Cilia Flores with conspiring to commit torture, narcoterrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy and weapons offenses, in a superseding indictment.
According to the department, the torture described includes electric shock, asphyxiation, rape, forced nudity, prolonged isolation, starvation, punishment cells and psychological torture, such as threats to harm and kill victims’ families. Maduro and Flores each pleaded not guilty to the new charges on Thursday, according to ABC News, which reports that the indictment accuses them of torturing people, including Americans, to help them cling to power.
