The United Nations General Assembly elected, in three rounds of balloting, Dapo Akande of the United Kingdom and four other judges to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), for nine-year terms starting on February 6, 2027.
Akande received 129 votes, in an election where the absolute majority was 97. Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud of Jordan and Phoebe N. Okowa of Kenya were re-elected, and François Alabrune of France and Rena Lee of Singapore were elected. Akande will become the first British judge on the court since 2018 and is expected to sit on the bench as the court decides the case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza.
