With Democrats having won majority control of the House in the midterm elections, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is on the cusp of becoming the nation’s first Black speaker of the House, after Democrats trounced Republicans to win the chamber.

A vote of his colleagues is expected when the new Congress convenes on January 3. Jeffries has promised a robust 100-day agenda to lower the cost of living and launch oversight and investigations to hold the Trump administration accountable, with impeachment an option. Katherine Clark is expected to become the majority leader and Pete Aguilar the majority whip. Jeffries was elected House minority leader in 2022 and is the first Black politician to lead either party in the House or Senate.
