The Caribbean Community (Caricom) reaffirmed at the Commonwealth summit in Antigua and Barbuda, which opened on Sunday, its demand that the United Kingdom take institutional responsibility for slavery and pay compensation.
Saint Lucia’s prime minister and Caricom’s chair pro tempore, Philip J. Pierre, said in a statement that moral reparations and economic compensation cannot be left out of the negotiations or replaced by a symbolic apology, and Buckingham Palace said King Charles III will not apologize on behalf of the country.
