US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that he spoke on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) talks in Atlanta with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the possibility of Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin interacting at next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
“We didn’t have a meeting. We spoke,” Rubio said at a press conference after the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting. The conversation dealt “just briefly” with the opportunity for the leaders of the two countries to interact at APEC, according to TASS. Le Monde’s live coverage noted that Trump and Putin could meet in mid-November, according to the top US diplomat.
