Democrat Roy Cooper won the Senate race in North Carolina against former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley and is the first Democrat elected to one of the state’s two seats since 2008 — Cooper’s lead — he is a former two-term governor — led Republicans to cut funding for Whatley’s campaign.

In New Hampshire, Democrat Chris Pappas, a four-term congressman, won the Senate race against former senator John Sununu and will be the first openly gay man to serve in the United States Senate. Democrat Juliana Stratton won in Illinois against Republican Don Tracy, in an election marking the first time in history that three Black women hold the Senate at the same time. Moody will keep the seat until the 2028 election.
