The United States (US) is considering lifting sanctions on tankers in the so-called shadow fleet tied to Russia and Iran to address soaring diesel prices ahead of the midterm elections, according to multiple reports and a senior US official.

The plan would allow previously sanctioned vessels to carry legal oil not subject to US sanctions, according to Reuters. Around 15% of the world’s tanker fleet is under US sanctions, according to an Energy Aspects estimate cited by Middle East Eye.
