Poland stopped registering asylum applications on the border with Belarus in March 2025 and has kept the measure in place for 18 months, the Associated Press reports.

Warsaw wants the European Union (EU) to authorize temporary suspensions of asylum applications in cases of “instrumentalized” migration, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on September 16 a proposal for a European framework to respond to “planned and weaponized” migration, the Associated Press adds.
