Republican senator John Curtis of Utah called on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, for the US Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit and to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden, according to the Associated Press and ABC News.

In the letter sent to committee chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking Democrat Dick Durbin, Curtis cited Trump Jr.’s wedding after-party in the Bahamas in May 2026, partially paid for by Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association (IBA) and close to Vladimir Putin. The case was revealed on 14 September 2026 by ProPublica, which reported that Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars, including the rental of a private island and a fireworks display, through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai. “The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president,” Curtis wrote, also raising the family-backed crypto ventures, international real estate deals and investments in defense contractors. Durbin backed the request, saying that to ignore the matter “is to run the risk of being complicit in a cover-up”; the committee confirmed it had received the letter but said the Senate calendar makes a hearing difficult this year. Trump said last week that his son repaid Kremlev, offering no public evidence of the payment.
