Hungary’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee chairman, Márton Hajdú of the Tisza party, asked Republican US lawmakers to exempt the country from the sanctions law Donald Trump signed on Friday, which authorises tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that buy Russian energy or help others evade the measures, according to Hungary Today and Mezha.

Hajdú said Tisza is aware of the risks of dependence on Russian energy and that a plan to reduce it will be ready soon; Hungary imports about 5 million tonnes of Russian crude a year and 4.5 billion cubic metres of gas, according to Hungary Today. The law’s final text does not name Hungary, and China, India and Turkey are cited as potential targets.
