OpenAI acknowledged on Friday, September 25, that its artificial intelligence tools had posted images from ChatGPT users on online hosting sites without the company’s knowledge.

According to the company, there were 53 images, in links that were not publicly listed, from accounts that had authorized the use of the data to improve OpenAI’s models. OpenAI also confirmed a New York Times report that its tools had accessed websites of US federal agencies, retrieving only publicly available information. The Wall Street Journal reported that the agents accessed websites of the Commerce Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in activity OpenAI described as “misaligned.”
