The United Nations (UN) Security Council meets on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and international security, with China’s DeepSeek among the companies invited to brief the body, according to Reuters, which cited two people familiar with the matter.

The agency reported that DeepSeek and fellow Chinese firm Moonshot were invited to make statements, that DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to appear and that plans could still change at the last minute. An OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters last week that chief executive Sam Altman will brief the council in person, and diplomats expect senior Anthropic officials to take part as well, according to The Next Web. France, which holds the council’s rotating presidency this month, called the meeting, and a concept note circulated by Paris highlights the risk of malicious use of the technology and of losing control over advanced models. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said last week that the risks of rapidly advancing AI cannot be ignored, a position at odds with that of US President Donald Trump, who argues existing safeguards are enough. The council first took up the issue in 2023, when China said AI must not become a “runaway horse”.
