A video released on Monday shows Susy Aponte Polo, a candidate for governor of Peru’s Áncash region, speaking with a press crew seconds before she was shot at a campaign event in a market in Caraz on Saturday (19), according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

A journalist known for her programme ‘China Polo Dominical’, she was running for the Socios por Áncash party in the 4 October regional elections and died at the scene; five supporters accompanying her were wounded. According to AFP, Peru’s interior ministry said two Venezuelan men were arrested as suspects. Peru’s public prosecutor’s office, which opened a femicide investigation, reclassified the case as a possible contract killing and confirmed arrests in flagrante, according to Forbes Perú; the country’s electoral authority condemned the killing and called for a swift investigation, and days before the attack Aponte had reported threats, according to Peruvian press reports cited by La Nación.
