Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, for the United Nations General Assembly and is due to meet Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 22, on the sidelines of a reception hosted by the US president, according to Reuters.

It is her first trip to the United States since she took office in January 2026 under Washington’s oversight, after a US military operation captured Nicolás Maduro, who is awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges in New York. Her delegation began discussing energy, debt and mining with counterparties in the United States, talks expected to lead to agreements under Trump’s plan to rebuild Venezuela’s key industries, Reuters reported, citing officials and sources. She met Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Ilan Goldfajn and, in separate meetings, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President Ajay Banga. The IDB is drawing up a two-year engagement plan for Venezuela focused partly on electricity and social protection, Goldfajn told Reuters. In August 2026, the two governments announced an oil agreement giving the United States 55% of the output of a new company with rights over 17 fields, according to the Associated Press (AP).
