Pakistani jet fighters struck what security officials described as suspected militant hideouts in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, and two Pakistani security officials said 28 suspected militants were killed, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Afghanistan’s government said the strikes killed three civilians and wounded four. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said it had confirmed that “at least three civilians, including a man, a woman and a girl, were killed and four injured in apparent airstrikes” in Kunar province, and that it had documented more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan from cross-border violence so far this year. The strikes came after Pakistan warned it could target militants inside Afghanistan following two deadly attacks on its security forces near the border, including Friday’s bombing at a mosque in Kohat that killed at least 21 people, most of them police officers.
