Iraq’s government is holding direct talks with the United States on an exemption for certain Iraqi airports from the U.S. ban on Iranian airlines.

According to AFP, in a text republished by The Hindu, the exemption would allow flights to resume “for humanitarian reasons, including medical treatment, education, religious visits, and for the interest of civilians.” Four Iraqi airports had suspended all flights to and from Iran days after the United States announced new aviation sanctions on any global companies doing business with Iranian airlines; Iraqi state media said flights were no longer operating from Baghdad, Najaf, Erbil and Sulaimaniyah.
