Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi meets Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 22, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, two days before the US president’s summit with Xi Jinping at the White House, The Japan Times and Reuters reported.

Takaichi wants to press Trump on Japan’s positions over Taiwan and trade so that he does not lean toward conciliation with China, according to The Japan Times. Reuters notes that Takaichi angered Beijing in 2025 by saying Tokyo could be drawn into a conflict over Taiwan, and that analysts say allies fear Trump may offer concessions to Xi in return for an economic win he could showcase before November’s midterm elections. Takaichi, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Trump are all scheduled to speak at the General Assembly on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
